Basically, this is the same motion as your lure but without any food inside. In the beginning, make your hand signals identical to your lure. Your dog will anticipate what you want it to do, and it will stand tall even though you don’t have a treat in your hand. This works great because it sets your dog up for success. The easiest way to do this step is by creating a pattern (e.g., 3:1), which means three lures followed by one hand signal. You will be able to trigger this behavior from a distance, which looks much more impressive. This step is to avoid having your dog become dependent on you holding a treat above its head to do the trick.
